Difficult Discussions about Divorce
Your textbook conveys the technical terms.
Without A Chair, as a companion, illustrates them.
The Workshop takes the discussion to a whole other level!
Our Shared passion…
The effects of divorce on Child Development, Adolescent Development, Lifespan Development and overall Family Systems Theory are widespread and yet disproportionally underrepresented in College & University teaching. Half our nation’s children have experienced divorce and there will continue to be an ever-growing majority of kids who, for one reason or another, do not grow up in a household with both biological parents. Accordingly, students, and in particular Psychology Majors, and especially those planning a profession in a psychological or related field, need to learn more about the influence of divorce on maturation.
For several semesters in 2019 and 2020, students in Dr. Julie Campbell’s Psych 302 / Adolescent Development class read portions of Without A Chair as a companion to their textbook. After a class discussion, the students had a Q & A with the Author. These sessions were insightful for the students, the instructor, and the author.
With this in mind we came together to create a workshop that explores the impact of divorce on the development of adolescents. It’s our collective belief that through students along with other young adults looking at their not-too-distant-past, as well as couples reflecting on their extensive backgrounds, that we can see a path forward to impacting relationships.

“One of my favorite assignments for this course is the class discussion with David Schel which gives students a really cool opportunity to ask questions to an outside source and to be able to integrate it into the content of this course.”
